Chapter 7: When Everything Feels Like a Trigger: The Hidden Key to Immune Calm

Recently, I was catching up with a friend over dinner. She’d been managing chronic health issues such as severe migraines, digestive symptoms, fatigue for a number of years now.

But this time, something felt different.

Her list of triggers had grown.

In addition to gluten and common allergens like peas and nuts, she now reacted to lemon, peanuts, coffee. And now, even tiny amounts of ingredients that used to be fine earlier were a problem.
Her migraines weren’t as intense as before (thanks to her careful routines), but the list of foods and situations she had to avoid kept expanding.

And her work stress?

It was still very high because the nature of her job hadn’t changed.

She’s not the only one.

I hear stories like this all the time from women navigating symptoms that seem unconnected on the surface… but follow a deeper pattern once we zoom out.

What’s really happening isn’t just “sensitivity”. It’s that your body has become more vigilant over time. Sometimes painfully so.

As Dr. Aviva Romm writes in The Adrenal Thyroid Revolution,

“Almost all of my patients were perpetually overwhelmed, with a relentless sense of stress and dread over their never-ending to-do list of personal, professional, and family responsibilities, unable to carve out time for self-care, or even to prepare and eat regular meals.”

She calls it the Western Cluster—a 21st-century pattern of chronic symptoms that’s somehow become “the new normal.”
Sick. Tired. Foggy. Wired. Unwell, but without clear answers.

Over and over, her patients echoed the same plea:

“Dr. Romm, I just want to feel like myself again.”

Illness doesn’t begin at diagnosis

Here’s where Dr Romm’s work intersects with mine:
She explains that our bodies aren’t failing, they’re responding to the environment we are asking them to live in.
Also, illness doesn’t begin at diagnosis, but is the result of slow, cumulative overload that eventually tips us out of balance.

She draws from the powerful science of psychoneuroimmunology and insights from the brilliant book Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers by Robert Sapolsky.

In this book he shows how chronic stress impacts not just our minds, but our immune system, hormones, digestion and much more.

All of it runs through the HPA axis; it’s your brain’s ancient survival circuit that links your stress response with nearly every other body system.

So when that axis is disrupted?
It doesn’t just look like stress.
It looks like chronic migraines.
Food reactions. Skin flares. Exhaustion. Gut issues.
It looks like as if everything becoming a trigger.

Listen to the full episode here:
“When Everything Feels Like a Trigger: The Hidden Key to Immune Calm.”

Let’s explore what’s really going on behind the flares, the role of immune tolerance.
And more importantly, how to start restoring trust in your body again.

So what is immune tolerance, really?

In a healthy body, your immune system knows what to protect and what to ignore.
It stays calm when it sees food, dust, pollen, or your own tissues and acts only when there’s a real threat.

But when your gut lining is compromised, digestion and absorption is impaired, nutrient levels drop, stress is constant, or detox pathways are overloaded…
your immune system starts sounding the alarm for everything.

This is how you end up with “random” flares, multiple food sensitivities, and that deep feeling of always being inflamed, foggy, or fatigued.

Your body isn’t broken.
It’s protecting you but with the wrong instructions.

You need your immune system to remember how to discern between what is a danger and what is not.

To stop flagging every bite, every emotion, every shift in your day as danger.

That’s what immune tolerance is.

When it is working properly, your immune system is stays calm around food, dust, stress and even your own tissues.

When it breaks down? It starts treating everything like a red flag.

That’s when you begin reacting to foods that used to feel safe.

You get more sensitive to foods that never used to bother you.
You feel drained after simple stress.
Your symptoms feel random and relentless.

And it’s not because your immune system is attacking you at random.
It’s because it no longer knows what to protect.

That’s the real pattern no one names.

How a Healthy Immune System Really Works

Before we dive into the 6 systems that help you rebuild immune tolerance, there’s something important to understand:

A healthy immune system is always paying attention to your world.
It’s constantly scanning your inner and outer environment and gathering information, learning, and responding appropriately to potential threats.

It acts both as a detective and a defender.
It should be able to recognize what’s truly dangerous and what isn’t.

In an ideal state, your immune system responds only when needed, like when it detects harmful bacteria or viruses.

But the rest of the time?
It should remain calm, grounded, and tolerant, especially toward things like foods you eat everyday, your own tissues, and minor stressors.

To stay balanced, your immune system relies on multiple built-in layers of regulation.
These overlapping mechanisms are what prevent it from becoming overreactive or hypervigilant.
When these mechanisms break down, we see immune dysfunction—and in many cases, autoimmunity.

In fact, research shows that the health of your immune system is more influenced by your environment than your genes.

So when we talk about restoring tolerance, we are talking about creating the conditions where your immune system can once again differentiate between friend and foe and respond appropriately and timely.

The Six Systems That Keep You Safe (And Calm Your Flares)

You don’t need 100 supplements or extreme elimination diets.
You need to restore your body’s ability to discern again.

👉 Book a Healing Roadmap Session—I’ll walk you through it.

In my work with women who’ve lived this cycle, we focus on restoring immune clarity by supporting the six systems that preserve tolerance:

These are the quiet, behind-the-scenes processes that help your body stop overreacting:

  • Teaching your gut to trust food again – Your gut is where your immune system first learns “what’s safe.”
  • Rebuilding your immune system’s internal “brakes” aka Regulatory T Cells (Tregs) or the Peacekeepers – Tregs prevent the immune system from overreacting to your own body. They suppress runaway inflammation and autoimmunity.
  • Supporting the right kind of balance via Balanced T-Helper Cells (Th1/Th2/Th17) – Too much Th17 leads to flare-ups. Too much Th2 leads to allergies. We restore the conditions where balance is possible.
  • Using nutrients like vitamin D and omega-3s to send signals of safety – Nutrients like these directly support immune tolerance:
Vitamin D → modulates immune response
    Omega-3s → reduce inflammation
Glutathione → supports detox and calm
Probiotics & fiber → nourish gut immunity
  • Reducing the overload but without creating fear
  • Strengthening your boundaries (literally—gut, liver, and mucosal linings)

And here’s the truth most people miss:
Your body doesn’t heal when it’s bracing for impact.
It heals when it feels safe.

✨ This is a shift most women miss—not because they don’t care, but because no one ever taught them this.
