Are you travelling in the right direction? (in other words, do you know what is important to you?)
(You may have read my earlier post “Do you know your WHY?” that I had written recently on finding our true purpose in life. I have written these posts as a series of 6 posts on various interrelated topics where the goal is to infuse our life with purpose, clarity and calm.
“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”
“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.”
-Alice in Wonderland
In this post, I am focussing on the fact that we need to always be clear on what is truly IMPORTANT to us not only in terms of work but in life as a whole.
If all of life is like a journey that we have embarked on, then knowing where you want to go is the first and most important step in getting there. However, for too many of us, we are so “busy” that we often do not stop to question whether we are travelling in the right direction.
As a result, we are not really clear on what we stand for or what we want from life and many of us end up filling our life with the mundane and the unimportant.
It is then really important that you move in a direction which is in alignment with what is important to you and what you want for life. However, this is where many people struggle as they fail to distinguish between what is important vs what is urgent. I have discussed this and how you can distinguish between both of these in my earlier post “TIME- what is your relationship with it? (and why it matters)“; check it out HERE.
Ask yourself these questions-
What is really important to you?
What brings meaning to your life?
What do you want to do and be in your life?
Is it your health? Your work? Your relationships? Your family?
Only once you are clear on this can you start making changes to your schedule and routine that is in alignment with what is important to you. Jot down 3-4 things that you would like to focus on right now and make these your priorities. These will change with time and you can adjust when you need to in the future.
Never ending TO-DO lists
Most of us walk around with a never ending list of things that need to get done. Our TO-DO lists get filled with tasks which tend to overwhelm us and often make us feel like we have failed in something.
As a result, many of us have a feeling that our life is filled one emergency after another. It feels like we are constantly moving from one activity to another but without any real sense of achievement.
This can also be in the form of
- a vague discomfort
- feeling empty
- feeling out of balance
- feeling confused and disoriented
Many of us need a wake up call to finally realise what was important all along!
This wake up call can be a loss of job, the death of a loved one, a marriage coming to an end and even a health crisis. Too often we need some sort of a crisis to show us what we should have paid attention to when we had the chance.
Honouring our commitment to ourselves
Once you are clear on what is important to you, setting goals in different areas of your life becomes the next thing that you need to do in order to get things done. However, you may need to break the bigger goals into smaller ones to make them more manageable and reduce overwhelm. What is most important is scheduling them into your calendar.
The second most important thing is honouring that commitment that you made to yourself when scheduling a particular goal. You need to treat it like you would any other appointment.
If you find yourself struggling to do this, you need to ask yourself this question
Are you willing to keep your word to yourself?
Because often when we do not see the results in our lives, it is not that we are not capable, we are too busy, do not have the right kind of support or do not have what it takes to turn our dreams into reality. It may simply be that we are not honouring the commitments that we made to ourself and this depends on the kind of relationship that we have with ourselves.
In the end, I leave you with this-
How much more fulfilling life would be if we…
did not wait for some kind of crisis or a wake-up call?
did not wait for our health to fail, our relationships to die or our children to grow up while we were too busy earning a living to start making changes and focussing on doing what really mattered most?
took out the time to understand what is truly IMPORTANT for us and then worked towards incorporating it in our lives?
